Sainsbury steps up Mobile Phone Sales

Sainsbury's LogoSainsbury's is launching a renewed bid to establish a strong mobile category to rival the top supermarket, Tesco. Sainsbury's has agreed a supply deal with Data Select under its new mobile electricals chief, Rob Cooke. Cooke joined the supermarket in late July after leaving Woolworths in May. The role of Carphone Partners, Sainsbury's exclusive supplier for the last two years, is unclear. Tesco is expected to sell between 1.1 million and 1.2 million prepay handsets this year, taking a 5% share of the prepay market, in contrast to just 250,000 to 300,000 sold by Sainsbury's. Carphone had been supplying Sainsbury's prior to the Data Select deal, and still supplies the supermarket with some prepay lines as well as TalkTalk fixed-line and broadband. Cooke is understood to be looking to do more business directly with the networks in the New Year, but the run-up to Christmas will see a mix of deals supplied by Data Select and Carphone. Tesco LogoCarphone-supplied stock for Sainsbury's is expected to be between 20,000 and 30,000 units in December, while Data Select is expected to account for around 120,000. The Sainsbury's contract has been described as 'the jewel in the crown' for Carphone's indirect operation, and is fiercely protected. However, mobile phone sales at Sainsbury's have been relatively poor over the last two years, while rivals Tesco and Asda have stormed ahead. Two Sagem handsets, supplied by Data Select, are the first to be signed up; the £29.99 myC4-2 on T-Mobile and the £49.99 my501C on Virgin have been dispatched to 500 Sainsbury's stores. Separately, online retailer Amazon has broadened its mix of distribution partners. It had previously sourced handsets exclusively from Carphone Partners.
