Do You Want To Use Your Mobile On The Underground?
It has been an age old problem for mobile phone users, as they inexplicably get cut off in mid call as the train they are on goes through a tunnel, or they enter the underground. While this has just been taken for granted for many years, it seems that finally somebody is looking at ways to ensure connectivity, even on deep underground trains.
Glasgow transport operators have approached technology provider Arqive to look at the potential to place connection beacons throughout Glasgow’s vast underground network, thereby ensuring better connectivity times.
Historically the problem has been simple, the mobile phone masts could not reach mobile phones users when in tunnels, underground, etc. The positioning of strategic beacons on the transport network is set to be well received by the business community, and give the city a head start on other UK cities. This is vital when looking to attract new business, and will assist in the City’s quest to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
What Next?
At the same time the City authorities are also looking at introducing a significant Wi-Fi service within the area of the city, which again will prove popular with the business community. As mobile phone handsets continue to develop, the next step will be broadband technology although it may take a while to filter through to the UK user.
Wi-Fi is the service by which mobile phones and computers can “tag” onto existing internet signals and “piggy back” the services without actually requiring a physical internet connection. These services are fairly common in some areas of the far east which are years ahead of the UK in terms of cutting edge technology.
On a positive note, the UK government are set to auction off further UK frequencies next year. These new frequencies will allow Mobile TV, Mobile Broadband access and additional technologies such as WiMax (a development of the Wi-Fi service) to be developed in the UK. The potential for these markets was recently highlighted by the introduction of the first UK mobile phone with TV capacity, which was released by Virgin.
As many mobile companies count the cost of the disastrous 3G licence auctions and look to the future, it appears that there will be more collaboration between providers in order to reduce the overall cost and risk to the industry.
