Samsung F300 (Ultra Music) Mobile Phone
Samsung have been looking to increase their exposure to niche markets throughout 2006, and the Samsung F300 has been one of their most successful forays into the niche music market. The phone itself is a slab design, which has proved so popular with their target age group but it has been amended to highlight the musical function rather than your standard mobile phone functionality.
The dimensions of the Samsung F300 are a compact 103.5 mm x 44 mm x 9.4 mm and it weighs in at a very impressive 78 grams - among the lightest around. The phone compares well to other offerings in this niche market from the likes of Nokia and Sony Ericsson. The handset itself is a sleek shiny black colour, in a similar vein to the “chocolate” phone. The display functions of the phone are very unique, with a full keyboard on the front, and a very small screen measuring 1.4 inches in diameter at the front.
However, on the reverse of the phone there is a full length display, and a one key small keyboard predominantly for playing music - although it is easy to switch between screens so that you can display messages, etc on the larger display (offering 176 x 200 pixel resolution, 262,000 colour combinations on the larger 33 mm x 42 mm display).
Due to the music orientation of the mobile there are an increased number of slots around the side of the handset allowing the connection of headphones, MP3 tools, etc. The Samsung F300 is powered by a 720 mAh Li-Ion battery which offers 155 hours of standby time and 2.5 hours of talk time. The phone book offers a generous 1,000 record capacity which allows you to store mobile numbers as well as additional information like email address, secondary numbers, etc. There is even the opportunity to assign an MP3 file to the ring tone of a specific contact.
While the phone is directed at the music enthusiast it still offers the standard camera phone, personal organiser, JAVA games, SMS and MMS messaging systems, etc. The music offering is very impressive with a vast array of options available from MP3 files to Radio, not to mention great sound delivery and a very user friendly menu. There is also an impressive touch sensitive screen for easy control and navigation.
While not necessarily 100% comparable with some of the more expensive offerings from the likes of Nokia and Sony, the Samsung F300 is a useful product for the music fanatic and should do fairly well in what is starting to become a crowded “niche” area of the market.
