Review: Samsung SPH-P9000 Mobile Phone or PDA?
Samsung today unveiled the SPH-P9000 Deluxe MITs, the latest in mobile convergence device. Introduced at the Mobile WiMax Summit 2006, the Samsung SPH-P9000 ushers in the new era of mobile phone convergence technology, capable of voice and multimedia data communications through Mobile WiMax technology.
The Samsung SPH-P9000 is a PDA-based device utilizing Mobile WiMax and CDMA EV-DO connectivity for wireless access to the Internet and simultaneously providing mobile phone connection for voice communication.
With Microsoft Windows XP as the operating system, users will find the contents and applications familiar and easy to use for work and play. Integrating a QWERTY keyboard, the Samsung SPH-P9000 offers painless typing and internet surfing, while the MP3 player function, VOD, and camera function provide a quick access to multimedia entertainment.
The 5.0-inch WVGA screen is prepared for movie and document viewing, while the 30 GB hard drive stores music, movies, and documents. All of these unique features are combined into one device that weighs in at a little over one pound. The Samsung SPH-P9000 will be launched in Korea first half of 2007.
To be honest, I’m not certain to call the Samsung SPH-P9000 a phone or computer. Then again, in this wireless/digital age, what isn’t? I think Samsung calls it a “mobile convergence device” but that sounds more like a Politically Correct moniker to me. The SPH-P9000 uses the ever-so-popular WiMAX technology along with CDMA-EV-DO connectivity. The WiMAX provides the Internet connectivity, while the CDMA-EV-DO provides the mobile phone/voice communication. As you can see from the oddly-angled photo, a QWERTY keyboard is all folded up in there. This gives you the power to surf the web and send/receive e-mail just like you were at your desktop or laptop. The five inch screen is excellent for viewing documents. There is about 30GB of disk space which should be perfect for movies, music, for what you need. All of this uses Microsoft Windows XP operating system. Other features include its 1.3 Megapixel camera, as well as its Bluetooth connectivity. The Samsung SPH-P9000 will be launched in Korea sometime in 2007. Something tells me that a device that folds like this one could easily make its way into other countries.Samsung SPH-P9000 Specifications - Standard: Mobile WiMax / CDMA 1x EV-DO - Camera: 1.3-Megapixel Camera - Display: 5-inch WVGA LCD - 1 GHz (Transmeta) CPU - QWERTY Keyboard - Bluetooth (Class 1) with BT Messenger - MiniUSB / 24 pin Connector - Extended I/O Pack - 2980 mAh / 7200 mAh Battery - 30 GB Embedded - Size: 143 x 92 x 29.7 mm - Weight: 560 g
