Mobile Phone Scams Are On The UpIn a sign of the times, there has been a massive increase in mobile phone scam attempts, with a recent report from Australia indicating a 345% increase in the last 12 months. As technology moves ahead it is noticeable that it is easier to send mass SMS messages, many of which are connected to premium services ranging from Horoscopes, to Gambling to services of a more adult nature. When will it stop? Who will pay the price?
The abuse seems to be so widespread throughout the industry at the moment that it may be some time before the offending parties are brought back into line. In the meantime innocent victims such as the student in Hobart, Australia will still be in line to cover the unexplained $87.50 text services charges which appeared on his first months phone bill.
The scam can start with one innocent phone call, or text message requesting a Free Horpscope, or maybe a trial period for a Gambling service. Once the service provider has your phone number, this will then be added to mass databanks of fellow “customers” who will receive text messages on a regular basis. The text messages are either premium rate, and charged against your bill unless you unsubscribe (at further costs), or some services will keep sent relentless free text messages advertising their offerings until you unsubscribe at a cost.
What is frightening is the fact that those issues reported are only the “tip of the iceberg” with many more scams going unrecorded. Unless people come forward to report these incidents, it will take longer to weed out the underlying companies. In an area of mobile phone use which has been unfairly targeted in the past, it is this handful of unscrupulous operators who are tarnishing the good name of the genuine service providers.
