The recent strategy of LG has been to update former models, adding further functionality, re-packaging and re-launching to the mass market. The LG B2100 is the next step in this process, and while it varies form earlier models, there are many similarities which are making the LG brand so popular. In line with recent models the LG B2100 is a very slim 105.5 mm x 44 mm x 15.9 mm and weighs in at a minute 73 grams - one of the lightest phones available on the market. The size and dimensions of the phone make it very very easy to slip into a pocket and it is also easy to hold in your hand. The phone is powered by a 780 mAh Li-Ion battery which offers 250 hours of standby time although a rather disappointing 3.5 hours of talk time.
The design of the phone is the classic “slab” like shape, with the large display screen being the main focal point of the device. The screen itself has a 128 x 128 pixel resolution, 5 text lines and offers a combination of up to 65,000 colour variations. While the screen is a little dated compared to current displays available, it does the job, even if visibility is slightly diminished in direct sun light. The layout of the keys themselves is slightly different from the norm, set in a more curved fashion which reflects the new design of the phone exterior. The 4 way navigation key is slightly different, as there is no central “OK” button, but this does not really have a major impact as there are other navigation keys situated to the left and right. As seems to be the fashion at the moment, the interface connector which is located at the bottom of the casing is covered by rubber “seal” which ensures the overall look of the phone is not interrupted.
The menu system is fairly basic, highlighting the options available such as messages, call register, profiles, settings. organiser, camera, fun and tools, internet and applications. The phone book itself is a fairly basic offering with only 200 contact records maximum, although there are 5 fields available per record, with space for name, email address, etc. It is also possible to group your contacts into 7 different groups for ease of access. As far as the messaging system goes, the LG B2100 offers SMS and MMS formats which should cover the requirements of the average phone user - although this may distance the phone from the business market. The call list contains details of the last 15 numbers called, and received and can be used as a quick short cut to recall popular numbers. The basic settings menu allows you to adjust time, date, phone setting, call settings, etc which gives you the option to customise to your preferences.
There is a personal organiser facility which offers the most basic of options, but enough to help you plan you day ahead. The obligatory alarm clock and schedule organiser are the two most commonly used options, and fairly straight forward to use. While the phone itself is aimed at the mass market, with very few major luxuries, the VGA camera is a nice addition, offering a variety of pixel resolutions including 160 x 120, 320 x 340 and 640 x 480. All pictures are saved in a JPEG format, with the main display screen acting as a helpful view finder to ensure that you get that perfect shot.
On a more leisurely note the LG B2100 has a variety of JAVA games inbuilt, with the option to download further simple games via the internet connection facility. There is also the option to create your own picture displays and music offerings, although again this is fairly basic. The memory capacity of some 1336 KB is fairly small, but does allow you to save a few of your favourite pictures, etc.
While the LG B2100 is not the most up to date mobile, and obviously aimed at the lower / middle end of the mass market, there are enough basic services to attract new users or people looking a for a standard second phone. Well designed, light and easy to store, there are some good sides to the phone, which is probably best described as a feeder for more modern LG offerings.

We seen spy photo after spy photo. We learned about the incredible feature set. And we waited (and waited) for Verizon Wireless to announce the when and at what cost. Thankfully, our questions have now been answered. Verizon has set full retail pricing at $320.00, one year contract is $200.00, and a two year contract is $149.99, with the one and two year prices reflecting the mail-in rebate. Granted, it ain’t gonna launch on Black Wednesday as some of us would’ve hoped, but “a few days later” still sounds a lot sweeter than “December,” does it not?
